The Solidaridad – ETC
organic cotton program in India will focus on the following objectives.
- Establish an independent farmers’ owned Organic Cotton Growers Association
by 2008.
- Exporting 1500 Tonnes of quality (>27mm and 3.5-4.5 micronaire) lint by
2009
- Certified as Fair Trade and Organic.
The cotton production will be undertaken within the framework and Goals
stated in the TMF project proposal: “Main streaming of fair trade IVe Organic
cotton in India”. The Goals imply that the people, environment and economy will
be addressed in a fair, ecologically and economical sustainable manner.
- People: Fair price for the produce to the farmers and increased stake
holding through cooperatives and improving labour conditions.
- Planet: Cotton will be produced according to organic standards, thus safe
guarding the soil, environment and health of people.
- Profit: The production will be made sustainable through efficient
production, reducing the cost of production, competitive price in relation to
production inside and outside India. A long term market to families will be
offered.
The project targets for 3 years (until 2007) are:
- 655 tons of lint cotton, totally from the three areas.
- Cotton produced will be 100% in transition.
- Constant quality measured by international standards.
- FOB lint max. 10-15% more than FOB lint conventional cotton.
- Functional self supported organization of farmers.
